Validation rules are checks made at various stages of data processing to ensure that data items are well-formed or sensible and that processing has produced sensible results. This may include sanity checks such as whether an email address has the right format, or more sophisticated checks of semantic integrity, such as whether the rate of change of physiological variables is within a sensible range.
